Best Day Trips from Tampa Bay — Your Weekend Adventure List
One of Tampa Bay's underrated advantages is location. Within a two-hour drive, you can swim in crystal-clear springs, explore charming small towns, paddle through mangrove tunnels, visit world-class attractions, and see parts of Florida that look nothing like the suburbs. After 23 years of weekend exploring, here are the 20 day trips I recommend most — organized by drive time from central Tampa Bay.
Under 1 Hour
1. Fort DeSoto Park
Drive time: 30–40 min from Tampa What to do: Beach, kayaking, fishing, nature trails, dog beach, camping The deal: Five interconnected islands at the southern tip of Pinellas County with some of the best beaches in Florida. The beach is consistently ranked top-5 nationally. The kayak trails through mangroves are stunning. The dog beach is the best in Tampa Bay. Pack a cooler and spend the full day. Best season: Year-round (less crowded weekdays, Oct–April is perfect weather)
2. Caladesi Island State Park
Drive time: 40–50 min from Tampa (plus ferry from Honeymoon Island) What to do: Pristine beach, nature trails, kayaking The deal: Accessible only by ferry from Honeymoon Island or by kayak, Caladesi is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands on Florida's Gulf Coast. The beach is spectacular — soft sand, clear water, and far less crowded than Clearwater Beach just to the south. The ferry runs regularly and the kayak trail through the mangroves is outstanding. Best season: October–May (summer is hot but swimmable)
3. Hillsborough River State Park
Drive time: 30–40 min from central Tampa What to do: Kayaking, hiking, camping, wildlife viewing The deal: Class II rapids (yes, rapids in Florida) on the Hillsborough River, along with nature trails through hardwood hammocks, camping, and picnic areas. The kayak run through the rapids is a blast and unique for flat Florida. Fort Foster historic site is on the property. An easy half-day or full-day trip. Best season: Winter/spring (higher water levels make the rapids better)
4. Bok Tower Gardens
Drive time: 55–60 min from Tampa What to do: Gardens, carillon tower, hiking trails, Pinewood Estate tour The deal: A 250-acre garden and bird sanctuary centered around a 205-foot Art Deco singing tower (carillon). The grounds are immaculately maintained with azaleas, camellias, ferns, and oaks. The daily carillon concerts are mesmerizing. Pinewood Estate (a Mediterranean-style mansion) is worth the add-on tour. One of the most beautiful and peaceful places in central Florida. Best season: January–March (peak bloom for azaleas and camellias)
5. Myakka River State Park
Drive time: 55–60 min from Tampa What to do: Airboat tours, hiking, canopy walkway, wildlife viewing The deal: One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks with a canopy walkway (one of only two in Florida), airboat tours on Upper Myakka Lake, and miles of hiking trails through pine flatwoods and prairies. Alligator viewing from the bridge over the weir is practically guaranteed. The park feels genuinely wild. Best season: Winter (dry season — wildlife concentrates near water, easier hiking)
1–1.5 Hours
6. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Drive time: 60–70 min from Tampa What to do: Mermaid shows, spring swimming, Buccaneer Bay waterpark, kayaking The deal: The famous mermaid shows have been running since 1947, and they're a genuine Florida treasure — underwater theater in a natural spring. But the real draw is the spring itself: crystal-clear, 72°F water perfect for swimming and kayaking. Buccaneer Bay waterpark (included with admission) is great for families. The kayak run down the Weeki Wachee River is stunning. Best season: Year-round (mermaid shows run daily; Buccaneer Bay open spring–fall)
7. Crystal River — Swim with Manatees
Drive time: 75–90 min from Tampa What to do: Manatee snorkeling tours, Three Sisters Springs, kayaking The deal: The only place in the United States where you can legally swim with wild manatees. Winter months (November–March) bring hundreds of manatees to Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs, where guided snorkeling tours put you face-to-face with these gentle giants. It's a bucket-list experience. Even outside manatee season, the springs and kayaking are beautiful. Best season: November–March for manatees; year-round for springs and kayaking
8. Cedar Key
Drive time: 90 min from Tampa What to do: Seafood, art galleries, kayaking, bird watching, slowing way down The deal: A tiny, remote island community on the Gulf Coast that feels like Florida 50 years ago. No chains, no development, no rush. Just fresh seafood (the clams are famous), local art galleries, waterfront restaurants, and a pace of life that makes you question everything about your daily routine. The sunsets over the Gulf from the dock at the Island Hotel are unforgettable. Best season: October–May (summer is hot and buggy)
9. Tarpon Springs
Drive time: 35–50 min from Tampa What to do: Greek food, sponge docks, boat tours, shopping The deal: The largest Greek community in the United States, centered around the historic Sponge Docks. Authentic Greek restaurants (Hellas, Mykonos, Mama's), sponge diving boat tours, bakeries with baklava and loukoumades, and a waterfront that feels like a Greek fishing village. Come hungry and leave with a bag of sponges. Best season: Year-round (Epiphany celebration in January is spectacular)
10. Sarasota Arts and Culture
Drive time: 50–65 min from Tampa What to do: Ringling Museum, Siesta Key Beach, St. Armands Circle, downtown dining The deal: Sarasota punches well above its weight culturally. The Ringling Museum complex (art museum, circus museum, Ca' d'Zan mansion) is world-class. Downtown Sarasota's dining scene is excellent. St. Armands Circle has upscale shopping and restaurants. And Siesta Key Beach — with its #1-rated quartz crystal sand — is the cherry on top. This is a full-day trip with multiple stops. Best season: November–April (perfect weather, cultural season in full swing)
11. Mount Dora
Drive time: 75–90 min from Tampa What to do: Antique shopping, lakefront strolling, restaurants, festivals The deal: A charming small town in Lake County that feels like a New England village transplanted to Florida. Antique shops line the downtown streets, the lakefront is scenic, and the restaurants have improved dramatically. The annual art and antique festivals draw visitors from across the state. Pair with a drive through the rolling hills of Lake County. Best season: October–April (festivals peak in fall and winter)
12. Rainbow Springs State Park
Drive time: 80–90 min from Tampa What to do: Spring swimming, tubing, nature trails, gardens The deal: One of Florida's most beautiful springs with crystal-clear water for swimming, a tubing run down the Rainbow River, and maintained gardens around the headspring. Less crowded and less commercial than some of the more famous springs. The tubing run is a gentle, scenic float — perfect for families. Best season: March–October for swimming/tubing (spring closes for swimming in winter some years — check ahead)
1.5–2 Hours
13. Ichetucknee Springs State Park
Drive time: 2 hours from Tampa What to do: Tubing, snorkeling, nature trails The deal: The premier tubing destination in Florida. A 3.5-mile float down a crystal-clear, spring-fed river through pristine forest. The water is 72°F year-round and so clear you can see every fish and turtle below you. This is the quintessential Florida nature experience. Arrive early — the park limits daily visitors. Best season: May–September (tubing); year-round for hiking
14. Ocala National Forest
Drive time: 90–110 min from Tampa What to do: Springs, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding The deal: The southernmost forest in the continental US, with multiple springs (Alexander, Silver Glen, Juniper, Salt Springs), the Florida National Scenic Trail, and vast pine forests. Silver Glen Springs is particularly spectacular — a large, deep spring opening into Lake George with incredible visibility. Multi-day exploration possible with camping. Best season: October–May for hiking; year-round for springs
15. LEGOLAND Florida
Drive time: 45–55 min from Tampa What to do: Theme park for kids ages 2–12 The deal: Located in Winter Haven on the former Cypress Gardens site. LEGOLAND is a theme park specifically designed for younger kids (2–12 years old). Rides, LEGO building activities, water park, and the Miniland USA display. Annual passes make it a regular weekend activity for Tampa Bay families. Adults without kids will be bored; families with young kids will love it. Best season: Year-round (less crowded on weekdays and during school months)
16. Walt Disney World
Drive time: 70–85 min from Tampa What to do: Four theme parks, Disney Springs, resort dining The deal: If you have kids (or are kids at heart), living 75 minutes from Disney is a genuine perk. Annual passes make spontaneous trips feasible — a half-day at Epcot or an evening at Disney Springs is a reasonable Tampa Bay day trip. Without annual passes, the cost is steep for a day trip. Best season: January–February and September (lowest crowds)
17. Universal Orlando
Drive time: 75–85 min from Tampa What to do: Theme parks, CityWalk, Harry Potter Wizarding World The deal: Universal's parks are arguably more fun for adults than Disney, and the Harry Potter areas are genuinely magical regardless of age. Epic Universe (the new park) has added massive capacity. Annual passes make Tampa Bay-to-Universal a viable regular trip. Best season: January–February and September (lowest crowds)
18. St. Augustine
Drive time: 2+ hours from Tampa (pushing the day-trip limit) What to do: Historic district, Castillo de San Marcos, St. George Street, Flagler College, beaches The deal: The oldest city in America (founded 1565). Walking the historic district, touring the Spanish fort, exploring St. George Street's shops and restaurants, and seeing Flagler College's stunning architecture make for a full, memorable day. It's a long drive for a day trip — consider an overnight. Best season: March–May and September–November (avoid summer heat and peak tourist season)
19. Little Manatee River State Park
Drive time: 30–40 min from Tampa What to do: Hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, camping The deal: A surprisingly wild state park in south Hillsborough County with 6+ miles of trails through sand pine scrub and river hammocks. The kayak run on the Little Manatee River is scenic and relatively easy. Horseback riding trails are available. One of the closest "nature escape" options from Tampa. Best season: October–April (cooler, less buggy)
20. Dade City and the Withlacoochee State Trail
Drive time: 45–60 min from Tampa What to do: Cycling, antique shopping, restaurants, kumquat festival (January) The deal: Dade City is a small, charming town with a growing restaurant and antique scene. The Withlacoochee State Trail (one of Florida's best rail-trails) runs nearby for cycling. The annual Kumquat Festival in January is quirky and fun. The surrounding Pasco/Hernando countryside is rolling and scenic. Best season: October–April; Kumquat Festival in January
The Bottom Line
Living in Tampa Bay means living within easy reach of springs, beaches, state parks, charming towns, and world-class attractions. The weekend day-trip options are genuinely one of the best lifestyle perks of this area — you could do a different trip every weekend for a year and not repeat. Most of these destinations are uncrowded on weekdays and accessible year-round.
