Best Fishing Spots in Tampa Bay — The Local's Playbook

Tampa Bay is one of the best fishing destinations in the United States, and that's not regional pride talking — it's a fact backed by tournament anglers, fishing publications, and the sheer biomass of fish that call this estuary home. Whether you're a fly-fishing purist chasing tailing redfish on a grass flat, a family looking for a Saturday morning pier trip, or a weekend warrior targeting offshore grouper, Tampa Bay delivers.

After 23 years here, I've fished most of these spots personally. Here's the honest guide, organized by county.

Hillsborough County

Ballast Point Pier

Location: South Tampa, Bayshore Blvd area What to catch: Snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, sheepshead The deal: A historic fishing pier that's been a Tampa staple for decades. Free to fish, well-lit for night fishing, and productive year-round. Night snook fishing under the lights in summer is legendary. Parking can be tight on weekends.

Courtney Campbell Causeway

Location: Connects Tampa to Clearwater across upper Tampa Bay What to catch: Snook, redfish, trout, ladyfish, jack crevalle The deal: Wade fishing along the causeway flats is a Tampa Bay tradition. The grass flats on both sides hold fish year-round. Low tide exposes sandbars where trout and redfish feed. Park in the designated areas and wade out. Best at dawn or dusk.

Upper Tampa Bay Conservation Park

Location: Channel District area, north of Courtney Campbell What to catch: Redfish, snook, trout in the backwater creeks The deal: Kayak fishing paradise. The mangrove creeks and shallow flats are accessible only by paddle craft, which keeps pressure low. Launch your kayak and work the shorelines with soft plastics or topwater lures. Outstanding fall redfish action.

Medard Park (Freshwater)

Location: Plant City/eastern Hillsborough What to catch: Largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish The deal: A 700+ acre reservoir that's one of the best freshwater fishing spots in the Tampa area. Bass fishing is particularly good around the flooded timber and grass edges. Boat ramp available. Bank fishing is accessible too.

Pinellas County

Skyway Fishing Pier State Park

Location: The old Skyway Bridge spans, south Pinellas/Manatee county line What to catch: Kingfish, Spanish mackerel, grouper, snapper, cobia, tarpon, sharks The deal: The most famous fishing pier in Florida, period. Built on the remnants of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge, the pier extends far into Tampa Bay, giving shore anglers access to deep-water species normally reserved for boat fishers. The south pier is in Manatee County, the north pier in Pinellas. Both are productive. Night fishing for snapper and grouper is outstanding. $4 entry fee per vehicle. Worth every penny.

Fort DeSoto Park

Location: Southern tip of Pinellas County What to catch: Snook, redfish, trout, flounder, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel The deal: Fort DeSoto offers multiple fishing options — pier fishing at the Gulf pier, wade fishing on the flats, and kayak fishing in the backwater channels. The mangrove shorelines hold snook and redfish. The Gulf pier produces Spanish mackerel and kingfish during migration. One of the most versatile fishing spots in Tampa Bay.

John's Pass

Location: Madeira Beach, between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island What to catch: Snook, snapper, sheepshead, trout, flounder The deal: Fish the bridge, the jetties, or the seawall. John's Pass is a tidal exchange between the Intracoastal and the Gulf, and fish stack up here. The bridge shadow holds snook at night. Sheepshead cluster on the pilings. Also a departure point for offshore fishing charters.

Weedon Island Preserve

Location: Northeast St. Pete What to catch: Redfish, snook, trout, snapper The deal: Kayak and canoe fishing in the mangrove-lined backwaters. Protected waters with minimal boat traffic make this ideal for paddle craft anglers. The grass flats hold trout, and the mangrove edges are productive for snook and redfish on rising tides.

Manatee County

Anna Maria Island Pier (City Pier)

Location: North end of Anna Maria Island What to catch: Snook, pompano, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, flounder The deal: A rebuilt pier in a beautiful setting. Free fishing, scenic views, and consistent catches. Snook patrol the pilings at night. Pompano run along the beach in spring and fall. Family-friendly with restaurants and shops nearby.

Palma Sola Causeway

Location: Connects Bradenton to Anna Maria Island What to catch: Trout, redfish, snook, ladyfish The deal: Wade fishing along the flats is excellent, particularly on the south side. The grass beds hold trout and redfish. Easy access, free parking along the causeway. Popular spot, so arrive early on weekends.

Pasco County

Anclote Pier and River

Location: Tarpon Springs/Holiday area What to catch: Snook, redfish, trout, tarpon (seasonal), snapper The deal: The Anclote River mouth and surrounding flats are underrated fishing territory. Less pressure than Pinellas or Hillsborough spots. Kayak anglers do particularly well working the mangrove edges. The pier produces a mix of species year-round.

Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park

Location: Port Richey What to catch: Redfish, trout, snook in the backwaters The deal: A kayak fishing gem. The salt springs and tidal creeks hold fish in a pristine, quiet setting. No powerboats, no crowds. Pack a kayak and explore.

Fishing Licenses

Residents: Florida saltwater fishing license ($17/year). Freshwater license ($17/year). Combo ($33/year). Purchase at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com or any Walmart sporting goods counter.

Free fishing from shore: You do NOT need a license to saltwater fish from shore or a pier in Florida. Only from a boat or if you're targeting certain species. This is a huge perk for casual anglers.

Piers with built-in licenses: Many public piers (including Skyway) include the fishing license in the pier entry fee. Check before buying a separate license.

Charter Fishing

If you want to go offshore (grouper, kingfish, amberjack, snapper), a charter is the easiest way for newcomers:

  • Half-day inshore charter: $350–$500 for 2–3 people. Target snook, redfish, trout on the flats.
  • Half-day offshore: $600–$900 for up to 6 people. Target grouper, snapper, kingfish.
  • Full-day offshore: $1,000–$1,500+. Target bigger game further out.

Book through local captains rather than the big party boats for a better experience. Ask for recommendations at local tackle shops.

The Bottom Line

Tampa Bay is a world-class fishery hiding in plain sight. You can catch snook from a free public pier, wade for redfish on a Saturday morning flat, kayak through mangrove creeks chasing trout, and run offshore for grouper — all within the same metro area. For relocators who fish, this is one of Tampa Bay's most compelling lifestyle advantages.
